Artist and educator William Spurway works from his initial physical experiences in the landscape [walking, looking, gaining a sense of place], aided by photography, and quick sketches prior to executing a full painting. He generally works quickly on any given painting in his preferred oils; he is less inclined to work and then rework over and over. But does enough always to “resolve” any painting. Generally speaking what goes down stays down. Given recent feedback, hHe is moving toward introducing more impasto and texture to his landscapes of Dumfries and Galloway.
For the district’s annual Spring Fling art festival and open studios weekend, he is preparing to paint a bull on a very large canvas. To get a feel for the anatomy of his subject, he has produced several drawings of the beast.
