The Niches are a set of glazed recesses in the Midsteeple Building in the Dumfries High Street. One once held a thermometer and measures 50” high, 8.25” wide and 4” deep. The larger one held a barometer: 20” h x 11.25”w. x 3” d.

One plan I have for the Niche Gallery in Midsteeple is a set of ceramic tiles, with cyanotype images of ‘Old Dumfries” glazed onto to them, thus combining a printing and textile process to studio ceramic works. See previous e-portfolio post.

So it certainly appears feasible.
However, another idea is the story of working lives in Dumfries. It would coincide with a just opened exhibit at the Dumfries Museum [Fighting For Justice].

The pamphlet ‘Uncovering Working Lives’ written by Ian Gasse in 2022 offers a walking tour of key locations in the town centre, such as Midsteeple, a locus of public meetings, or the former Equitable Co-operative Society shop (opposite Iceland).
