Haircloth fits within the brief for “recycle, reuse, et al” …. of a graded unit in the HNC year. The basis of the work revolves around the coarse. loosely woven hessian (burlap) sack — originally used for kiln-dried logs. On top will be an arrangement of other woven and embroidered textiles. This may be entirely abstract or partly figurative (as with the bottom image). Additional hand and/or machine embroidery may be added directly to the hessian, which itself may hang loose or be stretched across a frame.
