H817-20b Block 4 – Activity 3 – Part 2
Reflect on your current teaching environment or on a teaching environment that you know well. How are student data used in this case?
Record the data use under four headings:
Used to benefit learner(s)
These are a few examples from my own context:
Students have access to their own profiles so they can check if we hold the correct information about them and report any errors.
Student’s mobile phone numbers are used to contact them with important announcements such as campus closures due to weather or non-availability of systems due to upgrades/problems.
In some Moodle courses students have an activity progress tracker which helps them to measure their own progress through a module.
If learners are entitled to Council Tax exemptions our Moodle module will present them with a button to download a pre-filled template form which is sourced from the local council. This saves the learner time gathering necessary information and may avoid them making mistakes by pre-filling much of the information.
Student absence data is used to trigger contact from support staff who will follow up and attempt to assist the student with any issues they may be having.
Used to benefit educator(s)
Student course / module enrolment data is manipulated to present a variety of reports and tools to lecturing staff through the internal intranet. They can enter module results, send an SMS message to an entire class and record registers all online.
Some students have additional needs which will be privately flagged to support staff who can contact the student to analyse what extra support they may need during their course.
Used to benefit administrators or managers
Student engagement and attendance data is recorded to allow managers to monitor the status of various course areas and provide support if any negative trends emerge.
The progress of various course groups through the induction period is presented as a report for tutors who can identify students who have not completed some or all of the parts of their inductions.
Other
Student data is used to complete funding council returns for the Scottish Funding Council.
Student records data is also used to calculate bursaries and funding applications on behalf of students.
It is also used to generate bus passes for those who live far enough from the campus to be entitled to a free bus pass.
