LearnNet 2020/1 – Moodle Cohort Structure

Cohorts are collections of users in the Moodle system.

The obvious cohorts are “all students”, “all staff”, “class reps” and perhaps other generic cohorts. This will allow enrolment of all students on global courses e.g. induction.

For course enrolment the system we aim to use is much simpler than the current unit based enrolment method.

The principal of the new structure is that if a student is enrolled on a course e.g. DACC, they will be added to the “All Students 2020/1” cohort and on an additional course and session specific cohort.

To give access to the HUB course for their enrolment a student will be added to a system wide cohort for their taught course. For example a DACC 2020/1 student will be added to a system level cohort:

ACCOUNTING HND @ SCQF LEVEL 8 (DACC) 2020/1

This cohort will automatically be enrolled in the course ACCOUNTING HND @ SCQF LEVEL 8 (DACC) (HUB) giving the student access to the HUB course immediately. We will not impose any other automatic cohort enrolments automatically beyond this level.

However, further cohorts will be created at the category level for the course / programme. This will allow CBO groups to be created for e.g. A and B groups / Infill groups. This will allow these students to be separated within the Moodle courses in a category. The use of these cohorts is optional although they have clear benefits when large numbers of students are involved in a course.

A new enrolment plugin is available in Moodle called “Cohort Members to Group” which creates a group within Moodle to match the chosen cohort. In addition it will automatically add the cohort members to the created group and maintain membership as students join or leave the course. e.g.:

Cohort members to group

Result: The single infill student is added to the chosen group.
