PROPOSED MOODLE SITE STRUCTURE

Objective

The new LearnNet Moodle version 3.9 is being laid out by Curriculum Area and Course (programme) rather than the old unit based method. We are moving away from the current, totally automated approach as this has caused confusion and led to the implementation of countless workarounds. Detailed information about the why the current unit based approach is difficult to maintain can be found here.

Solution

The proposed structure is as follows. All courses are contained in the aptly named ‘courses’ category. Within ‘courses’ there are separate categories for each curriculum area.

List of programme areas
List of programme areas

Within each curriculum area there are categories for each taught programme

course categories
List of course categories within a programme

Within each programme category there are individual Moodle courses including one  “HUB” course which will be the “home” page for the course. Any number of Moodle courses could be created within this category to represent units, projects or any other desired delivery format.

Below is example content for the business programme, then drilling down to the DACC Accounting course possible contents:

The content of the Programme category (beyond the existence of the HUB course) will be at the discretion of the lecturing staff. We will not be creating any units automatically.
